Why Udaipur Captures Hearts on Camera
Ask any professional wedding photographer in Rajasthan where they would choose to shoot a romantic pre-wedding session, and the answer is almost always the same: Udaipur.
We’ve spent over a decade photographing couples across Rajasthan. We’ve shot in the dunes of Jaisalmer, the forts of Jodhpur, the palaces of Jaipur. And still, when a couple asks for something genuinely romantic — something that feels cinematic rather than staged — we bring them to Udaipur every time.
The reason is simple: Udaipur is not just a beautiful city. It’s an atmosphere. The still lakes, the centuries-old palaces, the golden light that falls differently here than anywhere else in India — all of it combines to produce photographs that look like they belong in a film, not just an album.
Here are the 10 locations we return to again and again — and exactly why each one works.
1. Lake Pichola — The Crown of Udaipur
Nothing else comes close. The still morning water reflects the city like a mirror, and a couple silhouetted against Jag Mandir at sunrise is one of the most naturally cinematic compositions we regularly produce. A boat session from 6:30 to 8:00 AM captures a quality of light that no studio can replicate.
Best for: Sunrise boat session | Ideal time: 6:30–8:00 AM
2. Jag Mandir Island Palace
Arriving by boat to this 17th-century island palace is itself a cinematic moment. The marble pavilions, the Elephant Row, and the open terraces overlooking the lake create a setting that looks like a Bollywood film set — but is entirely real. Grand, regal, and genuinely awe-inspiring.
Best for: Heritage grandeur | Ideal time: Early morning or late afternoon
3. Sajjangarh Monsoon Palace
Perched 944 metres above Udaipur on Bansdara Hill, Sajjangarh gives you the entire city as your backdrop. The drive through the wildlife sanctuary adds forested road portraits. Schedule this 45 minutes before sunset and the sky turns amber and rose — no filter needed.
Best for: Dramatic panoramic sunset | Ideal time: 45 min before sunset
4. Bagore Ki Haveli Ghats
Our top recommendation for couples who want intimate and authentic rather than grand. The old haveli’s steps descend directly to the lake; the surrounding lanes are narrow, lantern-lit, and largely crowd-free before 8 AM. Some of our most emotionally charged images have been shot right here.
Best for: Candid and storytelling style | Ideal time: Early morning or evening
5. Shilpgram Craft Village
Terracotta textures, indigo-painted walls, vibrant folk art murals — Shilpgram gives pre-wedding photographs a palette entirely different from anywhere else in the city. Ideal for couples who want something visually bold and culturally rich.
Best for: Vibrant editorial look | Ideal time: Morning before crowds
6. Fateh Sagar Lake Promenade
More relaxed and open than Pichola, Fateh Sagar’s wide promenade and Nehru Island backdrop make for a cheerful, breezy session. Perfect as a second location to contrast a dramatic palace shoot earlier in the day.
Best for: Easy, playful couple moments | Ideal time: Late afternoon
7. Saheliyon Ki Bari Garden
The historic royal garden — built for the queen’s companions — is a study in symmetry, fountains, and lush greenery. Particularly stunning during spring when flowers are in full bloom. For couples who want a softer garden-romance aesthetic.
Best for: Soft garden romance | Ideal time: Morning, October–March
8. City Palace Ghats & Courtyards
The palace’s outer courtyards, arched gateways, and stone corridors frame a couple naturally. The filtered light through Rajput architecture between 7–9 AM gives portraits a timeless, editorial quality we return to again and again.
Best for: Regal architectural framing | Ideal time: 7:00–9:00 AM
9. Ahar Cenotaphs
One of Udaipur’s most underrated spots. The 19 cenotaphs of the Mewar royal family create a uniquely dramatic, slightly otherworldly backdrop. Very few couples know about this location — which means it’s uncrowded and full of creative potential.
Best for: Dramatic, unusual compositions | Ideal time: Early morning or golden hour
10. The Old City Narrow Lanes (Ghanta Ghar Area)
The painted blue-and-yellow lanes around the Clock Tower area feel entirely private in the early morning. Colorful doorways, old wooden windows, and the texture of centuries-old walls make every frame feel handcrafted. This is Udaipur at its most real.
Best for: Candid, street-style romance | Ideal time: 7:00–9:00 AM

3 Things Every Couple Should Know Before Their Udaipur Shoot
- Book the golden hour, not a time slot. The difference between 7 AM and 10 AM light in Udaipur is the difference between a good photograph and an extraordinary one. Plan your session around the light — not just the location.
- Two locations are better than five. Rushing through five spots in a day produces mediocre images from all of them. Two locations, properly explored, with enough time to settle in and catch the changing light, consistently produce the best galleries.
- Let us handle the permits. Some heritage locations require photography passes. A good photographer handles this as part of their service — ask before you book.
